Jeeper to Engineer Pass

Today we went on a jeeper to Engineer Pass. We started our day driving up the Silver Thread Highway 149 northwest from South Fork. We drove past Creede through the valley and onward around Bristol Head mountain.

Bristol Head is pretty majestic...
Our first stop was North Clear Creek Falls. This is one of our favorite places to visit.
What a gorgeous waterfall!
We traveled northward over Spring Creek Pass and then Slumgullion Pass toward Lake City.
We stopped at the overlook for Lake San Cristobal.
Lake San Cristobal was formed after the Slumgullion Earth Flow blocked the river valley.
This is the view from Windy Point not far from the Slumgullion Pass summit.
From Lake City, we turned onto the Alpine Loop Hwy 20 toward Engineer Pass.
We stopped briefly at this old mining town. The dam is no longer functioning.
We arrived at Capital City, another old mining town, ate a picnic lunch, and then hunted rocks. We found a vein of quartz near an old mineshaft and were able to bring home a few nice specimens.
We really "LOVE" this aspen tree!!
We continued west from Capital City upwards to Engineer Pass. The road was pretty rough, but Paw Paw's 4WD Suburban and Bronco were up for it.
The kids got a chance to play in a snowbank.
